HISTORY OF VAN WINKLE
The Van Winkle family’s involvement in bourbon began in the late 1800s with Julian P. “Pappy” Van Winkle, Sr., a traveling salesman for W.L. Weller and Sons. In 1935, at age 61, Pappy opened the Stitzel-Weller Distillery in Louisville, Kentucky. His son, Julian Jr., continued the legacy until 1972 when the distillery was sold. In 1981, Julian III revived the family brand, focusing on producing high-quality wheated bourbon. The Van Winkles entered into a joint venture with Buffalo Trace Distillery in 2002, where all production now takes place under strict family guidelines.
